Daly, 28, of Hopefield Avenue, Huncoat, pleaded guilty to stealing a bottle of Paco Rabanne perfume from Express Gifts.
He was fined £70 and ordered to pay £30 in compensation and a £30 victim surcharge.
Suzie Privett, prosecuting, said Daly had been working in the packaging department when he was seen acting suspiciously. He had a carrier bag with him, which was prohibited in the packaging area, and when he was challenged he ran away.
“He returned the following day with a bottle of perfume and left it with a letter of apology,” said Miss Privett.
Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Duxbury had been unhappy over a wage dispute and also expected to be laid-off.
“He took this perfume because of that, but soon realised it was a foolish thing to do,” said Mr Taylor. “He showed remorse immediately by returning the item.”
