A MOTORIST was airlifted to hospital and his family detained for checks after a car left a West Pennine moors road and careered down a 20-foot embankment.

An air ambulance was alerted after a grey Vauxhall Corsa, travelling towards Edgworth, left Broadhead Road, near Pickup Bank, before coming to rest in a field below.

The accident happened just after 8.30am on Saturday.

The driver was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital from the scene, while his wife and two children, each said to be aged under 10, were examined by paramedics.

Watch manager Rob Birtwistle, of Blackburn fire station, said that no other vehicle was believed to have been involved in the incident.

Lancashire Telegraph:

He said: “When we arrived on the scene the mother and two children were out and by the side of the road and the driver was on the banking near to the vehicle.”

An air ambulance was able to land in a nearby field and the driver was placed aboard the craft with the assistance of paramedics.

He was flown to Preston, a specialist head injuries centre, for precautionary checks, and his family were driven to the city by road ambulance.

The Corsa suffered extensive damage to the roof and driver’s side of the car before it came to rest at the bottom of the embankment.

Police were also called to the scene of the crash.

Mr Birtwistle said: “We would ask drivers to be careful when negotiating country roads.”
