The man, 49, was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital after suffering a suspected seizure, the North West Air Ambulance (NWAA) said.

An NWAA helicopter arrived at the scene at 2pm and crews spent just under an hour treating the victim before he was flown to hospital.

Garry Rhodes, team leader at Bolton Mountain Rescue Team, said deputy team leader, Chris Greenhalgh, arranged for three vehicles to come to the walker’s aid.

Mr Rhodes said: “The Helimed aircrew paramedics then walked to the casualty site to commence immediate casualty care, placing the collapsed male on to a scoop stretcher.

“Responding team members, principally in our four Land Rover ambulances, were sent to different access points on to the moor, as the exact casualty location took time to establish.

“Team members in two of our Land Rovers met up with the Helimed crew on scene at 2.28pm.

“The eight crew members working with the Helimed crew, carried the casualty across the moorland slopes on a mountain rescue stretcher to the waiting air ambulance helicopter, which departed at 2.53pm for Royal Blackburn Hospital.”

The remaining members of the team were then stood down.

A spokeswoman for the NWAA said: “I can confirm that we were called out to an incident near Darwen at 1.45pm on Monday.

“It involved a man in his 40s who had suffered a suspected seizure. A Helimed was sent and the patient was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.”

Mr Rhodes said: “The team would like to thank the many walkers who wished us well.”
