ONE of East Lancashire’s accident blackspots was closed yesterday morning after another crash.

Police, fire crews and the ambulance service were called to Elton Road near Belthorn shortly after 8am after receiving reports of two cars colliding.

A person was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital with neck, head and back injuries while another motorist was taken by ambulance to the same hospital.

A Fiat Punto and a Toyota Yaris were involved in the incident and Elton Road and Grane Road were closed until shortly before 1pm.

An ambulance spokeswoman said: “We were called to the scene at 8.13am after receiving reports of two vehicles being involved in an incident.

“One person has been described as ‘walking wounded’ and was taken via land ambulance to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

“Another was taken in the air ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital with back, neck and head injuries.”

Commuter Sean Anderson said: “This stretch of road is one of the worst in the region, something needs to be done.

“People just keep on getting hurt and it can’t go on.

“I hope that this issue is looked at after the election.”

The latest incident comes after a 20-year-old man was killed and three people were seriously injured following a collision in August last year.

A 17-year-old girl was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by air ambulance, while a 15-year-old girl was flown to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

A 26-year-old man was taken by ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital.

All three suffered ‘major trauma’ and were in a serious condition.

In April 2013 a 34-year-old man died after his silver Vauxhall Vectra lost control and left the road.

An 18-year-old front seat passenger also suffered chest injuries and was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

In June that year a driver was killed when his car ploughed through a wall and into the side of a house .

Earlier this year Grane Road was closed after poor weather conditions caused five vehicles to leave the road over the space of two days in February.
