A TRAINING course that focuses on young people’s mental health in Hyndburn has been endorsed by Michelle Obama.

Health bosses and Community Solutions North West are running a series of classes with Lauren’s Place, the charity set up by friends and family of tragic Oswaldtwistle teen Lauren Johnson, who fell to her death at the age of 17 last year after a battling mental health issues.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course has already turned 16 members of staff at Lauren’s old school into certified mental health first aiders, and has now been praised by the American First Lady, who said during a recent appearanceit “really gives you the skills you need to identify and ultimately help somebody who is in need”.

Youth MHFA courses help to introduce a five-step action plan to help young people get the care needed in their community whilst also supporting them emotionally. The course also looks at how to recognise the signs and symptoms of different types of mental health problems including depression, anxiety and suicide.
