CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save the only pub in their village have raised more than £50,000 inside of three weeks.

The Dog Inn Belthorn Ltd, a community group set up to save the pub of the same name, has also been successful in registering the venue as an Asset of Community Value.

But members have pleaded for further support as they hope to raise £180,000 by their deadline of May 14.

The Belthorn Road site was bought by Great Mitton developer Ribble Valley Luxury Homes Ltd in February, but owner Stanley Ainsworth has agreed to sell it to residents if they can meet his asking price.

Kathryn Sharpe, secretary of The Dog Inn Belthorn Ltd, said: “We have obtained the Asset of Community Value status for The Dog Inn, which we received on St George’s Day.

“So far we have managed to raise £50,250 towards our goal of £180,000. Our deadline is fast approaching and we really need as much help as possible to help save our last village pub.

“Shares are still available and we are hoping to offer investors three to four per cent interest on their investment, with some tax benefits – dependant on personal circumstances – of up to 50 per cent tax relief against their other income.”

Previously owned by Enterprise Inns, The Dog Inn closed when landlord Nick Parker left in November to take over The Ranken Arms in Hoddlesden.

The pub was valued at £150,000 before it was purchased for an undisclosed sum the day before it went to auction on February 26.

Another campaigner, Jean Bain, said: “Hopefully if the share launch is the success we envisage, then the aim is to offer a more community-minded venue.

“We’ve looked at opening a shop facility which will sell a small range of essentials, and to provide conference facilities to local businesses at a competitive rate, as well as to re-launch the restaurant side of the business too.”

Ms Sharpe added: “Once the pub has gone it has gone and will never be replaced.

“We are one of the last local villages to keep the tradition of maypole dancing. This year could be our last.”
