ACCLAIMED Rossendale artist Liam Spencer is staging a major exhibition of new paintings at Clark Art of Hale.

One of the north’s most popular artists, Liam first came to public attention with a sell-out show at the Lowry Centre in Salford in 2000.

In the last 15 years he has had exhibitions in all of the north’s important public galleries.

A major retrospective of his work was held at Manchester City Art Gallery in 2006 and he has been the subject of two BBC documentaries.

The exhibition is entitled ‘New Impressions’ and will feature over 60 new works, all painted in Liam’s impressionistic style.

This new collection of paintings includes works from the extreme ends of the UK, from the Isle of Skye in Scotland to St Ives in Cornwall.

The majority of the other paintings are scenes of Manchester and East Lancashire.

There are also a number of paintings of New York, one of which is the largest painting he has ever produced.

Gallery owner Bill Clark said: “This is the first one man show we have held for Liam Spencer in the gallery.

“He is one of the most important northern artists of his generation.

“He has produced a great body of work for this exhibition and it’s going visually stunning.”

His paintings are expected to sell from between £2,000 and £12,000, with several pieces already snapped up.

The exhibition opens on Thursday at Clark Art in Hale, with a private view evening from 6pm to 9.30pm, and continues until May 16.
