A NEW licensee has taken over at a town-centre pub in Blackburn after the previous occupiers voluntarily wound up the business.

Colin Ennett took up the reins of The Adelphi in Railway Road on April 7, following the previous licensee’s departure.

Mr Ennett is now set to run the pub for the next six months after signing a try-before-you-buy agreement with owners Admiral Taverns. It comes after a meeting of the creditors of Boulevard Taverns Limited, which was run by the ex-licence holders, was set for next week.

The meeting regarding the company, which is registered in Bradford, is due to take place at the Extra Motorway Services off junction four of the M65 on Thursday, from 11am.

The meeting has been organised under the Insolvency Act 1986. A meeting of shareholders has been called and will be held prior to the meeting of creditors to consider passing a resolution for the voluntary winding-up of the company.

A spokesman for Admiral Taverns said: “The new licensee has entered into a try-before-you-buy agreement with us and will run the pub for the next six months.

“It is something that we do to make sure that the licensee is right for the pub and that the pub is right for the licensee. It also protects a person from investing a lot in a pub and then it not being the right deal for them.

“We will review the situation closer to the end of the project.”

Tony Duckworth, president of Blackburn with Darwen Chamber of Trade, said: “The council has got an abysmal record for maintaining and promoting the nightlife in Blackburn. It is good a new tenant has taken up the pub and I wish him all the best.”
