Brighton Theatre Group’s funny, high powered musical production opens with “Take Me To Heaven” and before long the audience are transported to heavenly bliss.

Deloris Van Cartier, would-be nightclub singer, witnesses a murder and the police offer protection by hiding her in a convent.  Her unruly behaviour clashes with the sternness of the Mother Superior especially when she turns the nun’s pathetic choir in to a high octane, show biz unit.

All Saints Church makes a superb setting for this riotous romp, dispensing with the need for elaborate sets

The exuberant Lucia Romero Clark revels in the role of Deloris and delights with her vocal versatility - one moment angelic; the next dishing up devilish disco. In contrast Jane Pemberton’s Mother Superior is full of dignity and restraint that cloaks a waspish wit.

The show is full of quality supporting roles as well as an excellent and large ensemble. Gary Lynn’s strong voice does full justice to “I Could Be That Guy”.

A comic highlight is “Lady In The Long Black Dress” featuring three ineffectual gangsters. But it is those black clad ladies who get the most laughs as they transform from a drab hopeless choir into glitzy performers. Alleluia!
