The firefighters had used specialist kit to free 13-year-old Luke Mason after he was trapped under a car in Lyndhurst Road last month.

He remains unconscious but stable in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool after breaking his skull, but is thought to be improving.

Donning their uniforms, the firefighters washed cars from 9.30am to help the Blessed Trinity student’s family pay to travel to and from Merseyside to be by his bedside.

White Watch raised £460 for Luke’s family, who turned up to thank them in the morning, after washing cars until 4pm.

Watch manager Neil Ashworth said: “We had a fantastic response from the Burnley public.

“Some did not even want their car washing, they just wanted to donate.

“I’d like to say thanks to Asda for hosting us, announcing in store what we were doing, and for supplying us with plenty of brews in the snow and hail!”

The crew also raised £195 for the Fire Fighters Charity during the fundraising event.
