Hyndburn's crew manager, Andy Pennington, said a man had fallen asleep then woke up after smelling smoke.

He said: "It was somebody who had drifted off and dropped a cigarette which burnt a small section of carpet.

"He realised what had happened and although there weren't any flames, it did give off fumes and woke him up.

"He threw a bit of water on it and was treated for smoke inhalation but he didn't need to go to hospital. All we did was put our fan on and open a few windows to get the smoke out of the room.

"There was damage to small section of carpet. We would tell everyone just to make sure they extinguish their cigarettes before throwing them away.

"The smoke alarms were fitted and working so that was good to see."

Hyndburn firefighters were called to Henry Street, in Church, at 12.45am after reports of a gas leak. They made the scene safe and no-one was injured.
