DANCERS are sitting pretty as they get into the groove for salsa lessons.

For the last six weeks, residents have descended on Darwen Library every Wednesday to take part in ‘sit down salsa’ sessions.

A spokeswoman for Darwen Library, in Knott Street, said: “It has been packed. We have had a lot of people take part and it has been really popular.

“Most of them were middle-aged but I would say one or two of them were in their 70s or 80s.”

Easier on the joints than traditional salsa dancing, sit down salsa involves, as one might guess, dancing along to music while sat on a chair.

The free classes, aimed at over-55s, were organised by Community Living Room, which is itself funded by Arts Council England and delivered by Blackburn with Darwen Council in partnership with Age UK, NHS Blackburn, and Action Factory Community Arts.

Community Living Room is a creative initiative to expand the uses of local libraries to encompass wider cultural experience.

They include paper making and bookbinding, held at Blackburn Library, lampshade workshops at Darwen Library and Mill Hill Community Centre and Library, rag rugging, and ceramic sculpting.
