TRAFFIC chaos across East Lancashire has continued as snow turned the district’s roads into ice rinks.

Several traffic accidents were reported, although none proved serious, and a two-day-old baby had to be taken home by mountain rescuers.

Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue Team delivered the newborn to the family’s home in Barley from Burnley General Hospital after deep snow around Pendle Hill left the route almost impassable.

Peter Goble, team leader with the organisation, said: “It was quite a lot of responsibility driving up the steep plain and it was not an easy drive.

“We were slipping and sliding but when we got them in the house and delivered the baby home on Thursday at around 6pm it was a good feeling. The parents were over the moon.”

In St James Road, Blackburn, a female motorist skidded off the road and into the brick wall of a house at around 7pm on Thursday.

Resident Mo Lambat uploaded to Twitter a picture of her white Audi TT embedded in the wall and urged motorists to stay safe.

He said there was “no grit whatsoever” on the road, and said a van and bus had also been abandoned.

Mr Lambat told the Lancashire Telegraph: “The lorry driver has put bricks next to his tyres and started walking back home to Accrington.”

Blackburn with Darwen Council said snowploughs and gritters had again been attacked by yobs throwing bricks. Drivers had reported being attacked in St James’ Road and Whalley New Road on Thursday evening. They had also reported incidents on Wednesday.

A council spokesman said: “It is plain and simple — if this happens again we will withdraw from the area and it will not be treated.”

“Treacherous” conditions in Marsh House Lane, Darwen, saw a bus skewed across the road at around 6.15pm on Thursday.

Mark Radnedge, from Avalon Way, Darwen, said the road had still not been gritted 14 hours later.

And a car overturned in New Lane, Oswaldtwistle, after sliding down the road.

Tony Spencer, watch manager at Accrington Fire Station, said crews were called to rescue the man from his car, although the driver had escaped by the time they arrived.

Some schools in the district remained closed yesterday for the second day running, while others opened slightly later than normal.
