A LORRY overturned on the M65 causing a complete closure on the westbound carriageway.

The crash happened between junctions 5 for Guide and 4 for Darwen at 2:15pm.

All three lanes were blocked.

The M65 eastbound carriageway was also affected but traffic is now moving freely.

Police said they had received reports of the driver suffering from minor injuries.

All three emergency services were on the scene and were working to re-open the motorway as soon as possible.

Chief Inspector Damian Kitchen said: “We are advising people who are travelling in the area, or who intend to travel in the next few hours, to plan alternate routes and if necessary take longer routes which avoid the Blackburn area.

Traffic is currently being diverted off the M65 westbound at junction 6 and we suggest using routes towards the M6 as an alternative for any destinations west of Darwen.

"Traffic is moving freely on the eastbound carriageway, however once off the motorway significant delays may be experienced.”

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The lorry is straddling completely the westbound carriageway.

"Fire engines and crews are on the scene. The driver managed to get out of the vehicle and is being cared for by paramedics.

"The crews are now making sure the scene is safe. A recovery operation will be done by contractors."
