The death of Coronation Street veteran Anne Kirkbride took centre stage at the London ceremony, with her screen husband and former Haslingden resident Bill Roache leading the tributes.

Mr Roache said: “I feel so blessed, honoured and privileged to have had those years working with Anne.

“What we’ll remember the most is the vibrant, warm-hearted, loving person who came to work each day, gave us all a hug and brightened up our lives.”

Former Coronation Street actress Natalie Gumede, from Colne, was also in attendance and said of Anne earlier: “A big character on and off set – a force of nature and a wonderful soul.”

Natalie, who played Kirsty Soames, the former policewoman and partner of Tyrone Dobbs in Corrie, was presenting the best serial drama award. She was a contender for the ‘best newcomer’ gong in 2013.

Corrie mainstay Antony Cotton, from Edenfield, was also in attendance.
