The problem is particularly bad in the evenings, according to those living nearby.

Graham Colbert, 62, said: “Cars are parking every evening on double yellow lines at the top of Shear Brow.

“This causes problems with two way traffic as well as problems with walking on the footpath. An accident is waiting to happen.

“I have advised the town hall and the local councillor, but the only response I have had by way of communication is a standard reply which does nothing.

“The situation is getting worse, probably because nothing is happening.”

Mussa Hassan, 60, who lives in Shear Brow said: “It is a problem sometimes.

“There are cars on here at evening times when schools come out.

“Sometimes cars come too close together and their mirrors get damaged.”

But residents said that sometimes drivers were left no option but to park on the lines, because there was a lack of spaces available.

Nasima Kara said: “To be honest, I do sometimes park on the double yellow lines when I’ve done the food shopping just to quickly unload the car, then I go and move it somewhere else.

“It is a big problem though. Why don’t we have facilities for residents to park?

“It’s dangerous, I think we would benefit if this was to become a one way street.”

Sahida Patel, 45, added: “Sometimes this road can get quite congested. There are no spaces available at all for residents.

“It’s dangerous and something needs to be done about the parking round here. “ “There needs to be more places made available for people to park.”Residents around the corner in East Park Road have also reported similar problems.

Mohamed Mukman said: “The parking on double yellow lines here is a big problem. This street is a main road and when someone wants to park it can be quite difficult and it’s dangerous.

“There are kids who cross this road. I think we could benefit from a zebra crossing.”

Shanaz Esmail said: “It is a big problem to park here. Sometimes I can’t get into my house because of the amount of cars parked on this road. It’s dangerous.”

Shear Brow councillor Hussain Akhtar said he was aware of the problems.

He said: “It is a problem, there are shops and takeaways and the college nearby, and people are blocking the road.

“It’s dangerous not only for residents of those streets, but for other people, because fire engines can’t get through.

“I’m urging people to please not block the road.”

A council spokesman said: “Illegal parking is of serious concern to the council and residents.

“If there have been breaches of car parking law by irresponsible motorists then the council will investigate the matter further.”
