COUNCILLORS have pledged to investigate a ‘dangerous’ junction in Blackburn town centre following two crashes within 24 hours.

White ‘Give Way’ lines were recently changed at the junction of Cicely Lane and Salford, near the entrance to Morrisons’ car park, due to gas works taking place.

The new lines have created confusion for many drivers by giving priority to motorists driving up Salford and turning right into Cicely Lane, over those driving straight down into Salford from Eanam.

On Monday evening at about 5.15pm there was a crash at the junction involving a taxi and Peugeot convertible, in which a woman suffered a minor injury to her collarbone.

There were then reports of a collision involving a cyclist yesterday morning. North West Ambulance Service attended the scene but police could not provide further details.

The incidents prompted councillors for the Shear Brow ward to raise concerns over the junction.

Coun Suleman Khonat said: “It’s a shame we’ve had these incidents and Highways need to look at this quickly. Normally when you drive straight you don’t have to give way to oncoming traffic. I will get the officers to check it out.”

Coun Hussain Akhtar said: “It’s dangerous and the give way lines need to be changed back to how they were.”

A spokesman for Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “The junction was changed by National Grid and the council would have said it was a viable suggestion.”

However, Jeanette Unsworth, of National Grid, said: “There are normally fixed lights at the junction and we proposed to replace them with temporary lights while the work was being done, but the council asked us instead to use give way markings, so that was done at their request. We’ve finished work there now and the council asked us to leave the markings in place as they need to do something with the fixed lights.”

The council did not respond when this was put to it.
