CREATIVE youngsters at a Blackburn school have made it to the national heats of a worldwide engineering competition.

The team from St Thomas’s Primary School in Blackburn became ‘Manga Masters’ on their quest for international glory.

The school has taken part in the First Lego League for a number of years and has previously made it all the way to the international finals in Germany.

And this year’s determined group is hopeful of emulating that success when it competes in Loughborough on February 1.

Deputy headteacher Donna Simpson said: “This year it was all about how people learn so they had to choose a topic they wanted to teach other people about and find ways to improve people’s knowledge. They chose the idea of drawing and then they got on to the idea of Manga as a few of them were into it.

“They made an electronic book because they picked up on the way people like watching videos and reading but also the fact people like using tablets and phones.”

To help with their project, the children, who are all from Years Five and Six, were able to make contact with a Manga author and a man training to be a Manga tattoo artist who went into the school to talk about how he got into it.

As well as the electronic book, they also developed a website and made a video.
