RESIDENTS at a care home took part in their very own ‘Bushtucker Trials’ when they got to handle exotic animals and eat some out of the ordinary dishes.

The 36 older people and staff from Altham Care Home got into the spirit, emulating local I’m A Celebrity contestant Carl Fogarty and his travails in the Australian jungle.

Sophie Mitton, from Bowland Farm, brought in exotic animals such as a bearded dragon, plated lizards, snakes including a python and several giant African land snails as big as the palm of an adult hand.

After the animals had terrified some and delighted others, those taking part then tucked into a meal which also mirrored the popular ITV1 reality show.

The residents ate burgers made from ostrich meat and sampled kangaroo and crocodile steaks.

To round off the exotic feast in a creepy-crawlie way, there were confectionery worms to enjoy.

The event was dreamt up by co-owner of Altham Care Home, Krish Singh.

He said: “I’m A Celebrity is a popular show with the residents and as part of our entertainment programme we invited the Bowland Farm to bring in their animals.

“The programme’s designed for schools but I think it works very well with a different audience such as this.

“At first Sophie brought out guinea pigs and rabbits to pet but things developed with the giant snails.

“People would touch the shells but only at arms length.

“But as the afternoon went on people relaxed and by the end many of our residents were cheerfully handling the giant python and the lizards.

“I think the staff were more scared than the residents.”

Viewers of Wednesday’s I’m A Celebrity episode saw Fogarty and Jimmy Bullard chosen to do a special task away from camp, which saw them helicoptered off.
