RESIDENTS in Blackburn with Darwen are being reminded about the winter grit squad service.
For several years the team of volunteers has been helping those living in the Roe Lee and Brownhill areas grit roads when the weather turns icy.

They are now appealing for more people to come forward and lend a hand.
Jason Walker, from the Roe Lee Area Residents Association, said: “The aim of the winter squad is to help look after the more vulnerable in the area and to help keep shared public areas free of ice and snow during winter and extended cold snaps.
“Each group has a central volunteer contact, supported by their ward councillors and community officers. When snow or frost is predicted, the central volunteer is informed by the Blackburn with Darwen Winter Facebook site, email or telephone by their community officer.
“The central volunteer then mobilises their winter squad to grit certain areas and clear snow as appropriate. Volunteers are also asked to keep an eye on local people they know to be particularly vulnerable who may need a bit of extra help.”
