Judges enjoyed a tasting session at the popular eaterie after it received more than 300 nominations from customers - and said they were blown away by the quality of the food.

Restaurant owner Ibby Ali, who has expanded the business recently with a new takeaway in Darwen, said he was stunned to be chosen as the winner.

He said: "We went down for the awards and they put the four nominees up on the big screen and I just thought 'one of those others will win it'.

"And when they said it was us I couldn't believe it. I think I stayed in my seat a bit longer than the rest of the team I was so surprised.

"We have entered these awards before and have not quite made it for whatever reason, but it is all about how it goes on the day.

"This year everything just clicked into place and it was our year."

Mr Ali said it was the mix of traditional and contemporary food that had particularly impressed the judges.

He said: "The judges said there were 18 restaurants nominated in the North West.

"They tried some of our fusion stuff and also a lamb madras and they said they liked the fact we were adventurous but also did not lose our traditional touch.

"And of course there was all the other stuff such as hygiene, cleanliness and the general atmosphere in the restaurant."

Mr Ali said the award win would have a big impact on his restaurant, both for customers and staff.

He said: "It gives our customers reassurance that the place is good.

"It also does good things for the staff who have started coming into work early and are dressing well without me having to say anything.

"From the chefs to the waiting staff, everyone has a sense of pride in working here and that I am sure we will have a good Christmas now."

Mr Ali said the win would not have been possible had it not been for the support of is customers.

He said: "I want to thank everyone who nominated us for this award. We are so grateful.

"This is not my restaurant, it is your restaurant, it belongs to everyone."
