The group launched fireworks at local councillors, marshals and police who were already in the area due to anti-social behaviour experienced in previous years.

A firework landed on a van belonging to a local resident, which caused extensive damage to the vehicle. Two arrests were made.

A number of people later moved on to the Robinson Street area of Little Harwood and let off fireworks again.

Supt Julian Platt said: “The behaviour of these men was not only highly irresponsible but extremely dangerous and I am thankful that no one was seriously injured.

“Our officers on patrol in the Blackburn area spoke with a number of groups during the evening and did seize a large amount of fireworks. I am determined to find the people involved and we are currently examining CCTV to try and identify those responsible.
