TRADERS and commuters working and travelling in Rawtenstall will heave a collective sigh of relief with the news United Utilities’ massive £7million sewer improvement works are coming to an end.

The works, which started in January this year, are to ensure the Valley’s sewer network continues to work properly while also protecting Limey Water and the River Irwell, and should be complete in a fortnight’s time.

Brian Jenkins, United Utilities project coordinator, said: “We completely understand carrying out engineering work on this scale has impacted the community and business owners getting on with their daily routine.

“We also realise people may not be able to see the real tangible benefits, but we do hope everyone appreciates the reason why the work has taken place.”

During United Utilities’ time on site the company used its partnership with charity Groundwork to set up a Rossendale Community Fund, to look at opportunities to offer cash to community projects.

A total of 35 local groups applied for grants or services of up to £750.

Paula Pearson, project manager at Groundwork, said: “The fund has helped a range of groups by supporting community events, environmental improvements, plus sport and youth programmes.

“The people of Rossendale clearly love where they live and we’re delighted to have been able to hopefully make it even better.”

The upgrade work was carried out in five separate phases, with temporary road closures and traffic management prompting scores of complaints about traffic delays.
