A DRUNK who made repeated ‘suicide’ calls to police in one night, sparked several midnight searches, a court heard.

Burnley magistrates were told how Christopher John Graham, 36, rang three times, twice threatening he was going to jump off bridges and one call saying he was on a multi-storey car park.

When he was located by officers, he told them he was going to carry on ringing them, but had no intention of harming himself.

Graham, who was in breach of a conditional discharge, admitted being drunk and disorderly on Railway Street, Burnley, on September 20.

The defendant, of Burnley Road, Padiham, was fined £65, with a £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs. Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said: “The defendant con-tacted the police on a number of occasions, saying he was going to jump off various bridges.”

Just after midnight, officers got a call from Graham, saying he was on Gannow roundabout, but when police got there he had left. Police then received a further call from the defendant, saying he was on the multi- storey car park in Burnley. Again, when officers turned up, he had already gone.

Mrs Yates said police then got another phone call from Graham, this time saying he was on Railway Street and was going to jump off the railway bridge. Officers went to the train station and saw Graham on the platform, sitting on the ground. He smelled strongly of alcohol and his speech was slurred.

The prosecutor added: “He said he was going to continue to ring the police, but had no intention of hurting him-self.”

Graham had been given a 12-month conditional dis-charge for being drunk and disorderly last December and was in breach of that and was fined for a similar offence in February.

The defendant, who was not legally represented, said he had mental health prob-lems and had just come out of hospital.

He said he had been to Inspire, the alcohol service, and was due to start a course there.

He continued: “It was stupid of me, but I am tying to sort these issues out. I know it's wasting police time, and can only apologise.”
