ANOTHER major Blackburn road will close for a week on Tuesday, but coun-cil boss Maureen Bateson has ensured essential maintenance will be done at night.

The Havelock Bridge on the main route connecting Mill Hill and Ewood will shut between 9pm and 5am from October 14 for seven days for essential repair and strengthening work. How-ever, the work is weather dependent and may be delayed if there are periods of rain.

With a £4 million year-long reconstruction of the nearby Ewood Gyratory System under way and Railway Road in Blackburn town centre closing for a week from October 27, borough bosses were concerned about further disruption.

Eanam has one-way traffic and diversions until the end of next month for gas main replacement and work is under way on the Hasl-ingden Road corridor.

Blackburn with Darwen regeneration boss Coun Bateson, who represents Ewood ward, has ensured work on the railway bridge takes place at night to minimise further dis-ruption.

Initial works have already seen traffic lights controlling one-way traffic flow under the bridge for some weeks causing delays.

She hopes the repairs and improvements can be completed within days.

A spokesman for owners Network Rail said: “We are repainting the bridge and installing impact protection beams which will protect the structure if hit by a vehicle.

Mill Hill councillor Damian Talbot said: “Noise at night may affect nearby residents but this is the best way to get this essential safety work done quickly.”

Two separate and extensive diversions will be in place for heavy good vehicles and light traffic using roads including Hollin Bridge Street.
