Firefighters said the occupants had attempted to extinguish the flames using damp tea towels but were overcome with smoke, and were eventually ushered out of the property by a neighbour who had heard their smoke alarm sounding.
The crews administered oxygen to the pair, and fitted a defibrillator to one of them, due to complaints of chest pains, and he was then taken to hospital.
