A 12-YEAR-OLD boy who died after falling from his motorbike has been described by his devastated family as ‘our cheeky little monkey’.

Logan Wood had been on a half day’s holiday from Mount Carmel RC High School in Accrington when he went to Cowm Leisure, in Whitworth, where he regularly practised motocross racing.

The youngster fell from the track at the motorsports venue’s quarry, off High Barn Lane.

Logan’s death is the second tragedy to have occurred at the quarry track.

In August 2006, 15-year-old Matthew Entwistle suffered multiple injuries when he dropped 20 feet down the vertical slope at the quarry.

The circumstances surrounding Logan’s death are still being investigated and a file will be passed on to the coroner.

In a statement, his family said: “Our beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin Logan.

“Our cheeky little monkey will always be remembered for his courage, wit, sense of humour, his love of life and all its adventures.

“He was tragically taken from us doing what he loved the most, riding his motorbike.

“He was a real outdoors boy and loved playing cricket for Oswaldtwistle and Church Cricket Clubs and football for school.

“If he wasn’t playing sport he would be out on his BMX or scooter showing off the tricks he could do.

“A real adrenaline junkie.

“He was loved dearly and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”

Xavier Bowers, head teacher at Mount Carmel RC High School, said: "We are profoundly shocked to have received the news of the tragic death of one of our pupils, Logan Wood.

"Logan was in year 8 and was an outstanding boy. His teachers, friends, support staff and all in our community who had contact with Logan remember him as a lovely, caring young person and are deeply upset at his loss.

“He had excellent reports both academically and for his attendance, punctuality and behaviour. Logan was a superb ambassador for Mount Carmel.

“We will miss him tremendously and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

"Our attention is now focussed on looking after and supporting our pupils, especially close friends who are grieving the sudden loss of a much loved friend."

Lesley Pemberton, head teacher Logan’s former primary school, St Mary's RC in Oswaldtwistle, said: "Everyone in school is totally devastated to hear the terrible news about Logan.

"Logan came to St Mary's in September 2006 and left to go to Mount Carmel in July 2013.

“He was a very popular boy with a great group of friends. He loved outdoor activities and played cricket for the school cricket team.

"Logan was a real character with a wonderful sense of humour. We offer our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends."

Phil Sykes, chairman of Church Cricket Club, also paid tribute to the sporty youngster.

He said: “We are very shocked to hear about Logan. He played for our Under 13s and was a popular lad.

“Our thoughts are with his parents and those close to him.”

And Oswaldtwistle councillor Peter Britcliffe said: “This is a very, very tragic accident and for such a young life to be lost is absolutely dreadful.

“I’m sure the thoughts of everybody in Oswaldtwistle and the vicinity will be with his family and friends. It’s a huge shock for them all.”

Whitworth residents said their thoughts were also with Logan’s family and friends.

Graham Banham, from Whitworth Methodist Church, said: “Our condolences to his family. It’s very sad.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw it on the news, a 12-year-old lad, what a waste of a young life.”

Muriel Clarke added: “It’s terrible when anything like that happens, it’s one of the hardest things for his family. He had his whole life before him.

“I just feel for them, it really hits people, it’s hitting us, but I can’t imagine what they’re feeling like.”

The owner of Cowm Leisure, John Whittle, said that he was not in a position to comment on the incident.

But a spokesman added: “We are deeply sorry for the family. He was a regular here.

“He was a very nice, polite lad. What’s happened is tragic.”

A spokeswoman for Rossendale Borough Council said: “Rossendale Borough Council is aware of the fatal incident that happened at Cowm Quarry, Whitworth.

“Our sympathies are with the boy’s family and friends at this tragic time.

“We are working with the Police and Health and Safety Executive as part of the ongoing investigation into this incident.”

Lancashire Constabulary said officers were investigating exactly what had happened at the quarry, and added that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) had been informed.

An inquest into Matthew’s death eight years ago found he had been riding on a motocross bike with a friend when he lost control of his bike while trying to negotiate at dip in the track.

Following his death, Cowm Leisure Ltd, which owns the quarry racetrack, pleaded guilty at Burnley Crown Court to failure to discharge a duty of care at the site.

Judge Beverley Lunt, who fined the owners £3,500 and ordered the business pay £1,500 costs, also criticised Rossendale Borough Council, which prosecuted the company, after she was told Cowm Leisure Ltd had had no health and safety checks by the local authority even though it had a Cerificate for Lawful Use from the council .
