A PEDESTRIAN was airlifted to hospital after a crash on a country road near Ribchester.

Police said the female walker was involved in a collision with a black Vauxhall Corsa in Stoneygate Lane, suffering a fractured skull and a broken jaw.

The car overturned on the carriageway, and the 17-year-old male driver was also taken to the Royal Preston Hospital with lacerations and bruising following the accident.

Investigators were on the scene for several hours and have appealed for witnesses to the incident, which happened near Lower Seed Green Farm just after 7.15am.

The road was partially blocked but had fully re-opened by about 11am.

Police said the injuries suffered by both the pedestrian and the driver were serious but not life-threatening. No-one was arrested, officers added.

Alan Ormand, Ribchester Parish Council clerk, said this section of the road was governed by the national speed limit, and was ‘particularly dangerous’ to walk along, as there is no pavement.

He added: “I obviously can’t say what’s caused this crash, but the road has a history of accidents and I think it should be 40 mph. We’ve been pushing the county council for a number of years to try and reduce the speed limit.”

If you witnessed the incident or can help the police with their investigation, call Lancashire Constabulary on 101.
