EVEN trans-Atlantic mods couldn’t keep away from East Lancashire’s ‘mod weekender’ as hundreds of Vespas and Lambrettas descended on Clitheroe.

And Canadian Jason Morris, who jetted into the UK especially, can’t help but have been impressed as the Ribble Valley festival was extended to three days.

Promoter Ste Porter counted in 392 scooters, each of which made the journey from the Cross Keys at East Marton to Clitheroe on Saturday.

And they were met by a further 80 at the Rose and Crown, in the shadow of the castle, as riders from the Ribble Valley, Burnley and Pendle and several UK clubs rolled through.

Burnley's Cheeky Northern Monkeys

“This is our biggest year so far and the riders have really done us proud,” said Steve of the festival, now in its third incarnation.

Burnley-based Cheeky Northern Monkeys scooped the prize for the best-attended club and there were also prizes for the best Vespa and Lambretta, and the finest ride in show, which went to a rider who adopted Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon as his motif.

The Grand was home to the event’s main stage, with Secret Affair, The Jam Collective and The Shade pulling in crowds.

But Pat Gallagher was well-regarded at Molly’s Cafe Bar, The Castle Inn weighed in with Heavy Mod, Clitheroe Social Club boasted Rambunkshus and The Joe Publix and Mike Dobbie played The Buck.

Much of the focus remained on the Rose and Crown with The Style Selektors, The Scandals, 5ft Fez, Steve Thompson & The Incidents and the Beat Generation radio show and Key Street Venue hosted The Universal, Northern Sugar, and Clash tribute White Riot.
