THE parents of a man killed by one punch in Blackburn town centre are hoping his story will help primary pupils consider their actions.

Pat and Dave Rogers, whose son, Adam, died in 2009, aged 24, after trying to calm down a row between two groups, gave an assembly to youngsters on what would have been their sons’s 30th birthday.

They said the Padiham Ladies Football Club coach, from Blackburn, was known for his smile and that they hoped to share his ‘friendly’ outlook on life to the children at St Cuthbert’s C of E Primary, in Darwen, where Adam’s friend, Gary Lloyd, teaches year six.

The school visit was part of the Smile A Mile For Adam campaign launched by the Rogers family to ‘help make the world a better place’ and raise money for Every Action Has Consequences, which was was set up in partnership with the Lancashire Telegraph following Adam’s death.

Pat said: “The assembly was brilliant and the response from the children was absolutely amazing.

“They were lovely and when we finished talking the kids all wanted us to answer questions and were talking about caring and having respect for each other. Because it was on Adam’s birthday, it was a really lovely way to start the day. It is not an easy day for us, but to be there with the all those children was amazing.

“Adam’s smile lit up our lives and had quite an impact on other people.”

During the assembly, a new video specifically designed for younger viewers was shown. It depicts Adam’s story in a cartoon format.

The Smile A Mile campaign was also discussed and saw all of the children putting on a smiley-faced sticker and promising to be kind and have a grin all day.

Mr Lloyd said: “The whole aim was to be positive and to get all of the children to be like Adam – happy and caring towards others.”
