TWO ‘party houses’ in the same street have been shut down by police after a barrage of complaints from residents.

Residents in Glen Street, Colne, say they have endured ‘12 weeks of hell’ at the hands of noisy neighbours throwing all-night parties.

Young people were seen taking drugs, drinking, playing loud music and fighting in the street.

The addresses, number 76 and number 82, were closed down on Wednesday and Friday respectively and one of them has been boarded up.

The occupant of number 76 has signed the house back to Stepping Stones Projects, a programme that provides housing for homeless young people and those who have been in care.

Reports of drug use on the front step of number 82 were reported to the private landlord that owns the house, who then called the police after realising the house had been illegally sublet.

Tarin Longworth, who lives in the street with her husband and little boy, Jenson, said living on the street had become a nightmare.

She said: “I only moved here a year ago and everyone told me Colne was lovely but it’s been a nightmare. They were partying and playing music all through the night until 7am when people were going to work.

“I had to keep Jenson off nursery for a couple of days because he was so tired and we had to move his bedroom to the back of the house.

“They were always fighting each other and shouting abuse at people.

“It got to the point where people were scared to leave their front gardens because you didn’t know what would happen." Tarin, 24, said that now the police have boarded up the house, she finally feels safe.

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said she looked out of her window a few weeks ago and saw one of the young men carrying a large piece of wood.

PC Mark Walker, of Vivary Bridge Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “On any given weekend, I’d say we received between 15 to 20 complaints every evening about number 76 Glen Street. We took action and shut both houses down.

“Since then, the police have visited the area to speak to residents who have enjoyed a quiet weekend.

“The problems experienced by the residents here have been numerous and very distressing. We want to send a clear message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated and action will be taken against anyone who behaves in this way.”

The occupants of neither house were arrested but police are investigating an alleged burglary and reports of shoplifting from the local off-licence.
