A 37-YEAR-OLD man who drove off after crashing into a parked car in Whalley was later arrested after hitting a lamp post in Sabden.

Blackburn magistrates heard Grzegorz Kosow, who had been celebrating his birthday, gave a police station breath sample which was more than three times the legal drink-drive limit and then refused to give a second sample.

Kosow, 37, of Brownlow Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to failing to stop after an accident, failing to provide a specimen and driving without insurance. He was bailed for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Scott Ainge, prosecuting, said David Saunders was in his home in Dale View, Whalley, when he heard a crash . He looked out and saw a car had hit his parked vehicle and ran outside to try and stop the driver. “The defendant revved his engine and drove off, smiling,” said Mr Ainge.

Shortly after, police were called to Padiham Road in Sabden close to the White Hart Inn where a car had collided with a lamp post.

A number of people were at the scene and Kosow, who was leaning against a wall, was identified as the driver.

Mr Ainge said Kosow was arrested and after refusing a second breath test became aggressive and abusive.

“He was interviewed when he had sobered up and admitted driving off after colliding with the parked car because he was drunk and uninsured.

Helen Farnsworth, defending, said Kosow made a bad decision to go out drinking to celebrate his birthday and then drive home. “He is very upset and very ashamed,” she added.
