The animal had been swimming with another dog when it started to struggle. Its owner jumped in to try and save it, but had to get out of the water when he started to have problems himself.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: “The dog went into the water and it was swimming with another god the owners had brought with them.

“There were two people with them and the man went in after the dog, but he started suffering difficulties and came out.

“He had to go home and get changed because of the cold.”

He urged people not to swim in quarries or to let their pets jump in.

The spokesman added: “It might look shallow, but it is deep in the middle and it does not take much for it to get cold.”
