The initiative will extend the opening of 100 delivery offices with the highest parcel volumes across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to seven days a week.

The Blackburn Delivery Office in Canterbury Street will open between noon and 4pm from this Sunday, as will Chorley’s in Chorley East Business Centre.

The scheme is designed to make it easier for online shoppers not at home during the day to collect their parcels. The scheme is part of a range of measures by Royal Mail, which are designed to make life easier for online shoppers.

Almost half of Royal Mail’s UK network of almost 1,400 delivery offices already opens later on a Wednesday evening to enable people to collect items that could not be delivered because no-one was at home when delivery was attempted.

Royal Mail has also rolled out its Delivery to Neighbour initiative across the UK.

This followed a trial of the initiative which found that customers welcomed the convenience of items being delivered to a neighbouring address if no one was at home to receive them.

Rob Jenson, operations director, said: “We are continuing to be more customer-responsive and provide more options for people to receive items they have ordered online.

“I am delighted to pilot Sunday afternoon opening at 100 of our delivery offices across the UK with the highest parcel volumes, including Blackburn.”
