HIGHWAYS chiefs have pledged that road improvements ‘will make Burnley a better place to live’.
Trafalgar Street closed yesterday to allow resurfacing connected with the Weavers’ Triangle regeneration project to be carried out.
It will not fully re-open to traffic until the morning of Saturday, September 13, but Lancashire County Council said it had changed the timings on traffic lights near the vacant Mitre Hotel in order to minimise queues in Westgate.
Oliver Starkey, highways manager for East Lancashire, said: “We're sorry for the inconvenience while Trafalgar Street is closed but hope people agree that it will be worth it in the long term as we make Burnley a better place to live, visit and do business.
“Changing the timings on the Mitre junction will help to keep traffic moving as efficiently as possible, and we've also arranged for BT to do a separate job on Trafalgar Street at the same time, which will help minimise overall disruption.”
Trafalgar Street will remain open for access and to allow staff and students to reach the University Technical College. A diversion will be in place via Burnham Gate.
