A NURSING home was evacuated last night after a resident’s bedroom caught fire.

Three crews - two from Hyndburn and one from Blackburn - attended the blaze at Springhill Care Home in Fairfield Street, Accrington, at 6.35pm.

Chris Archer, crew manager at Hyndburn fire station, praised workers at the nursing home for ensuring that no-one was injured during the incident.

Mr Archer said: “Although the staff did an excellent job in evacuating the residents from the bedrooms, it was unclear if everyone was accounted for in this very early stage of the fire.

“A search was carried out by four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and the fire was extinguished using a hose reel. The thick smoke was cleared using two ventilation fans.

“Thankfully the evacuation the staff had carried out initially had been very thorough and everyone was found safe and well."

The fire is thought to have been started deliberately.

Damage was limited to the bedroom, with the room suffering severe fire, heat and smoke damage.
