TELEGRAPH reader Alan Simpson wonders what his class colleagues at Lanehead Junior School, Burnley, in 1961, are up to nowadays.

The small five-classroom school which opened in 1834 was replaced in the 1970s with the modern St James-Lanehead School, which was built in the fields across Briercliffe Road.

The old school building was converted into cottage-style apartments.

Alan remembers playing football in the yard with a ball made of dozens of socks stretched over each other to form the appropriate shape.

Plastic balls were allowed when iron bars were later placed over the low large school windows!

He also remembers having lessons in the school’s flower and vegetable garden on warm summer days.

From memory he has captioned the picture the best he can.

He hopes former classmates will get in touch to fill in the gaps.
