THIS is the first look at a £500,000 overhaul which supporters hope will transform Ski Rossendale into a ‘centre of excellence’ for the north-west.

Plans have been unveiled for a new first-floor cafe and clubroom at the Rawtenstall facility, alongside improved disabled access and toilets.

And the nursery slope at the Haslingden Old Road centre would also be extended by around 45 per cent — 455 square metres — under the blueprints.

Bosses at Ski Rossendale, which is now a community interest company, are hoping to resurface the entire beginner’s run under Sport England’s ‘Improved Facilities’ initiative.

Architect Julian Monghan said: “These new facilities along with the improvements to the slope will ensure the ongoing viability of Ski Rossendale and also provide additional full and part time jobs at different levels.”

Part of the scheme will see a ‘tow’ installed to take ski enthusiasts up the nursery slope.

And all of the proposed extensions are within the existing site boundaries. Mr Monaghan added: “These proposals, as outlined as part of the planning application, identify a real opportunity to turn the current Ski Rossendale facilities into a ‘winter sports centre of excellence’.

“They will help to revive the centre by breathing new life into the facilities and attract both local and national users.”

He has also stressed that the plans should have a ‘minimal’ impact on the surrounding countryside. The centre is not within the green belt — but does border it.

The application is set to be considered by the Rossendale Council’s development control committee next Tuesday and has been recommended for approval.

One letter of objection has been received, claiming it would be ‘out of character’ with its surroundings and would also generate too much noise.
