ACCRINGTON Stanley have contacted police after thieves stole boots from several players – a day before a 4-0 defeat that saw them slip to the bottom of the Football League.

Stanley are spending several thousand pounds on increased security measures at the Store First Stadium after break-ins on successive nights.

Many of Stanley’s first team were left furious on Monday morning after arriving for training to find their boots – some of them specially adapted for matches – had been stolen from the kit room and dressing room.

Some bought new boots in time for Tuesday’s match at Shrewsbury Town, while others had to wear boots usually reserved for training. But Stanley slipped to a heavy loss to drop to bottom spot in League Two.

The club suffered another break-in on Monday night, when food and drink outlets were among the areas targeted.

Police are now investigating.

Stanley manager James Beattie admitted that the theft of the players’ boots ‘had not helped’ his team’s preparations for Tuesday’s game at Shrewsbury.

He said: “We were all shocked to find out this news. A number of my players have had their boots and other equipment taken, which have both monetary and sentimental value to them.

“As if it isn’t hard enough to try to keep this club in the Football League against the odds and with a small budget, this is another blow that could have a detrimental effect on both our season and the finances.

“We’re appealing to anyone who may have any information to contact the club or the police.”

The club believe a pair of intruders entered the ground on Sunday evening before returning in greater numbers on Monday night with tools to attempt to break into more areas. Stanley are ramping up security measures, with plans to increase the number of CCTV cameras at the stadium.

“We cannot afford this cost but we also cannot afford to allow unlawful damage to go without answer,” the club said in a statement.

It is terrible that such a theft could cause the club such financial misery, I hope the police catch the thieves and name and shame them. The best response would be for the people in the town and surrounding towns to come to the store first on Saturday and help the club by simply paying to watch the towns team, I can assure you they are much better than recent results would have you believe. Perhaps the club could be marketed better and some of the food prices could be a little lower. but unless people come through the gate I am afraid we will be unable to afford to stay in the league, There must be a big backer out there just looking for an opportunity to be associated with the best known club in the world. so I hope my little plea helps to get some people through the gates even if you just bring a friend, It all helps.

not sour grapes at all, this current team is not good enough, and as a supporter for over 20 years i think i have seen many good stanley teams and many good asfc players and this current team has no fight and no passion, i watch them on football league show every week, can't be arsed going and as for living in Thailand,i think not. Been back home for over 6 months now, give u a clue the team wears claret and blue and play better football.

So, a glory hunter now then - true supporters stick with their team through thick & thin even if circumstances prevent them from physically attending matches

a glory hunter my arse, i rememeber watching asfc in the old NP league going to places like Marine on a wet tuesday night or Leigh RMI (horwich FC) and standing on crap ground, going to Bournemouth or Colchester in the FA cup not a glory hunter just a fan who followed his team, now i live in Burnley its easier for me to go to the Turf oh i was on the Crown ground when asfc played the clarets. I am just sad that this team seems to have no guts or fight and it is only the start of the season i wish them well but relegation will kill asfc financially and after all the hard work they have done getting into the league it would be a shame if they were relegated PRIDE AND PASSION AND FIGHT is needed
