EAST Lancashire MPs have called on the government to recall Parliament over the crisis in Iraq.

Conservative MPs Andrew Stephenson, Jake Berry and Nigel Evans have urged the Prime Minister to recall Parliament because of the ‘deteriorating situation’.

Blackburn MP Jack Straw said that there was a ‘strong and mounting case’ to debate the issue in Parliament.

It comes as David Cameron chaired a meeting of the government's Cobra emergency committee on the situation yesterday.

The UK has made a third round of aid drops to help the thousands fleeing Islamist militants across mountains.

Mr Stephenson, MP for Pendle, said: “I think the time is right to recall Parliament.

“I think that we should debate a range of foreign affairs issues such as Iraq but also the situation in Gaza and in Ukraine.

“A lot of people are concerned about events in Iraq and the time is probably right for a recall. It’s important particularly when we are hearing that military equipment is being sent to the country, albeit for humanitarian use, but these things can escalate very quickly.”

Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen, said: “Parliament should be recalled so we can discuss the involvement of the RAF.

“We need to make sure that we hold the government to account and are aware of Britain’s involvement.”

Ribble Valley MP Mr Evans said on Twitter: “I don't think we can wait any longer to discuss events in the Middle East.

“I now believe it is time to recall Parliament — #thousandsslaughtered.”

However, some Labour MPs have said that they would be happy to go back, but fell short of a public call.

Gordon Birtwistle, who represents Burnley, said: “I suppose for the first time in my life I’m on the fence.

“If Parliament was recalled I would be happy to go back but I’m not calling for that to happen. We go back on September 1 and that’s only a couple of weeks away.

“If it was longer then I would be seriously calling for a recall.”

Graham Jones, MP for Haslingden and Hyndburn, said: “If Parliament if recalled then I’m quite happy with that.

“I would leave any call for a recall to the leader Ed Miliband.

“There are certainly a range of issues to discuss that have happened so far this summer.”

Mr Straw said: “I expect any decision from the government to be made in the next few days.

“I’m consulting with the shadow cabinet on this issue.”
