CLARETS shirts bearing the names of star players Ings, Vokes and Trippier have been flying off the shelves at Burnley's club shop.

Fans have snapped up 5,000 home and away shirts since they went on sale last month — 500 more than were sold during last year's nine-month season.

Officials said sales of all merchandise had soared in the run-up to the new Premier League campaign, which kicks off next Monday against Jose Mourinho's Chelsea at Turf Moor.

Adam Merrifield, a lifelong Clarets fan who works at the store in Harry Potts Way, said: “The new kit, the away kits and the away shirts are all selling quite well.

“People have been buying all sorts. The season DVD sold well, as have mugs and bags.

“We’ve pretty much sold out of babywear.

“Mums and dads have been coming in buying everything from baby grows to bibs and pyjamas.

“We’ve had a lot of new customers coming in.

“Everybody wants the shirt saying we’re in the Premier League for sentimental reasons.

“People are proud to be from the town and to wear the Claret colours.

“We’ve been getting a lot of schoolchildren in as well since the summer holidays started a few weeks ago.

“We’ve had quite a few girls in wanting shirts. The most popular shirts are Danny Ings, Sam Vokes and Kieran Trippier.

“Trippier’s been much more popular since the promotion because he played really well, and having just signed a new contract means people know he’ll be around for a while. Danny Ings is always popular because he’s a really good player and he’s a nice lad who does a lot in the community.

“And he did work at our holiday club, which had great feedback, which helps.”

Home kits are now available to pre-order from the online Clarets store.
