Leader accused of not caring about Darwen

Lancashire Telegraph: Kate Hollern Kate Hollern

THE leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Kate Hollern has been accused of breaking a promise to hold two executive meetings a year in Darwen.

Liberal Democrat councillors David Foster and Paul Browne claimed this showed her and the council’s main concern was Blackburn.

When the last meeting of the executive board was held in Darwen Town Hall in January last year, Coun Hollern said the plan was to hold two meetings annually in the town.

She said it was important Darwen people were involved in the decision making process.

Since then all meetings of the executive board have been held in Blackburn Town Hall and no future meeting are planned for Darwen in the official council diary.

Following the criticism, Coun Hollern revealed she had already earmarked a date later this year to hold a meeting in Darwen.

The meeting in January 2012 was the first in the town since October 2008.

Whitehall’s Coun Foster said: “I think it is just another example of how Blackburn is more important to the council than Darwen.

“Coun Hollern has broken her promise. Now she is Labour candidate for Blackburn she is more concerned about that town than Darwen.

“The town has one fifth of the borough’s population so there should be two meetings a year in our town hall.”

Coun Browne said: “This is just typical of Coun Hollern and the Blackburn-centric ruling Labour group.

“Darwen is an important, not to mention the best, part of the borough.”

Coun Hollern said: “I have got a date in mind later this year for the next executive board meeting at Darwen Town Hall.

“It’s a matter of logistics. It’s not as easy as it sounds to organise meetings there.

“I live in Darwen and regularly meet groups in the town so people can be assured I and the executive board are fully aware of its issues and needs.”

Sunnyhurst Labour councillor Dave Smith said: “I know Kate is very concerned about the town.

“It’s is quite difficult to get all the officers and paperwork needed for an executive meeting.”

to Darwen.”

“I am pleased it will meet at our town hall again later this year.”

How difficult must it be to move some papers from Blackburn to Darwen? Do Councillors in Blackburn not have cars, or is the bus service so terrible, that they can't travel to Darwen for a meeting? Makes you wonder how they manage to run the Borough at all. This is the kind of drivel Smith has been spouting for years- from his safe ward. Dave Foster and Paul Browne are right about this.

Aye, because it's a right long way away, isn't it? What? 4 miles? Take the number one bus from your brilliant new bus station.

That’s the reason why Blackburn with Darwen Council is in such a mess. Whatever mistakes they make they still get voted in again and again. They live within a Safe Seat Regime that allows mistakes to be made without any fear of losing their seat.

Kate Hollern and Jack Straw go hand in hand.

That’s why Blackburn with Darwen Council is in such a mess!

Totally agree abetterblackburn

What Is It about people still voting these clowns In year after year, knowing the bloody mess they have made of the Borough. Surely people can see Liberal Councillors work tirelessly within Darwen and are a credit to the town as much as It must be frustrating for them trying to get things done under this Labour led council. Kate Hollern and her sidekicks have made a complete mess of Blackburn to the point they are now offering £50 to outsiders for their opinions as to why they don't shop In Blackburn, you couldn't make It up what Labour have done to this Borough over the past few decades.
It would be an Ideal world If Darwen could become Independent and get out of the mayhem of what Is Labour controlled Blackburn. Just thank God Darreners that Kate Hollern won't be representing you In Westminster, because she can't turn up for local Issues never mind national ones. At least Jake Berry Is seen doing and showing an Interest In the town.
Unfortunately, someone yesterday commented on how people are concerned about the Image of what Blackburn has become, well that Image Is going to get worse for Blackburn when Kate Hollern represents the town nationally.

People of Darwen need to stick with the MP they already have, or a Liberal or UKIP candidate, but steer clear of Labour both Nationally and Locally because you only need to look four miles down the road to see the mess and destruction they have done to poor Blackburn!

As already stated above: The majority of Labour councillors within Blackburn with Darwen reside in long established safe seats. Their leader MP for Blackburn Jack Straw and Kate Holllern particularly so. Blackburn’s Safe Seat Strategy is definitely not for the benefit of the people that gave them their votes. ‘I’m all right Jack’ should be their slogan!

PS - I have voted Labour all of my life until realising that ‘The Labour Party’ no longer exists. You are now voting for ‘New Labour’ and you must be able to remember what a mess ‘New Labour’ under the leadership of Tony Blair made the last time. The people who were there then are the same lot who are there now. Best to vote for the person and not for the party name.

I remember ‘English Rose’ stating here not long ago that he/she thought that Tony Blair would soon be recognised as being the best party leader we have ever had. Does he/she not feel a little bit ashamed after the trouble caused to Iraq and the rest of the world due to those lies?

The voting majority within Blackburn and Darwen are being mislead due to Blackburn’s Safe Seat Regime!
