JAY ROD: Battling England have to keep faith with ace Rooney

Lancashire Telegraph: Wayne Rooney Wayne Rooney

I WOULD keep Wayne Rooney in the England team for the Uruguay game.

I think a lot has been made of where to play him but he is a world class player. He can create something out of nothing and he set up the goal for Daniel Sturridge on Saturday night.

When you have someone who can do the things that Wayne can then you have to him in the team.

Like any player I am sure Wayne wants to play up front because that is his natural position. But this is a World Cup and he will play anywhere for England. He can make a big difference to the team and there is no point in dropping him.

I don’t think Wayne will mind where he plays when it is in a World Cup for your country.

I have been asked to play wide before and sometimes you have to adapt your game a little bit for the sake of the team or the shape. Wayne won’t mind doing that. He will just be frustrated with the result.

Overall I thought England played quite well. I actually really enjoyed watching them play. It was nice to see them looking to attack and the pace and tempo they played with was really good. There were a lot of positives.

Italy are obviously a good side and they are an experienced one as well.

It’s a World Cup game and the differences are very small. England were unlucky to come away with a defeat but I am backing them to get out of the group.

I saw enough in the performance to suggest they can win their next two games. I am 100 per cent confident that they can get past Uruguay.

They lost against Costa Rica which was a massive surprise but it shows how tough a World Cup tournament is.

If England play like they did against Italy then I think they will have enough to get past Uruguay.

It was great to see Adam Lallana get on as well.

He is a talented player and I was really pleased to see him on the pitch in the second half.

With Luke Shaw and Rickie Lambert in the squad as well it is great for me to be able to watch them playing in a World Cup.

I was also impressed by Holland on Friday night.

They played so well and to beat Spain like they did shows that they will be a threat.

The Dutch had so much pace and speed on the counter attack and it was a great game of football.

But it is still early days in the competition and there will be a lot of twists and turns still to come.

Am not an huge fan of Wayne Rooney but will concede that he looked uncomfortable playing in that position, as he kept pausing in the flow of the game, to work where he should be, instead of making for space, to create a chance for others.
Perhaps, after the game is reviewed, they will put him somewhere more midfield or up front, where he can make more of a nuisance of himself..
If he is tying up two of the opposition, England gain the advantage of playing against a 10 man team. If they ignore him, he'll make the score sheet.

I do not understand the debate to drop Rooney from the starting line up. He is by far, the best player England have produced since Gazza. The only question I would ask is why are we playing one of the worlds best number 10's on the left wing to accomadate a goon like Welbeck. Now there's a guy that should only be wearing an England shirt if he bought one from JD Sports!!!!!
