THE owner of Accrington’s Arndale Centre has promised to look at safety measures following the death of a teenage girl.

Lauren Johnson, 17, fell to her death from the centre’s car park on Thursday.

More than 2,200 people have joined a Facebook group calling for the Arndale Centre, in Union Street, to be ‘made safe or knocked down’.

The group was created by Sarah Clitheroe, who has since called for people to march from Accrington Town Hall to the Arndale Centre, at 11am on Saturday, June 21.

She said: “We want to get our voices heard. We will be getting in touch with the police because I need to tell them something is taking place.”

Arndale Centre Holdings said in a statement: “The owners and centre management team are saddened by the tragic incident on Thursday.

“Staff worked closely with police to resolve the situation but were unsuccessful on this occasion.

“The centre will be working with the local authority and the Samaritans in order to prevent incidents such as this happening.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this very sad time.”

An inquest into the circumstances of Ms Johnson’s death will open later today.
