NEW signs are to be erected showing weight restrictions for heavy goods vehicles in Barrowford.

Residents in the village had complained to Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson about large commercial vehicles ignoring weight restrictions on side road and damaging parked cars.

Following an assessment of weight restriction signage, Lancashire County Council found that some significant junctions along Gisburn Road were missing signs, and these will now be replaced.

Mr Stephenson said: “I was initially contacted by a Nora Street resident whose car had been damaged three times in the last six months, but then heard about other cases in the surrounding area.

“This problem was costing residents thousands of pounds and there was concern about how poorly signed the weight restriction is and a lack of enforcement action from the police.

“There is a 7.5 ton weight restriction covering most of the streets west of Gisburn Road, with an exemption for access, but most of the roads do not have the correct signage, making this restriction unenforceable.”

The Pendle MP raised the issue with County councillor Christian Wakeford and Lanc- ashire County Cou- ncil’s senior traffic engineer, Simon Bucknell. Mr Stephenson has also liaised with Lancashire Police about the restrictions to ensure that they are fully aware of the restrictions and so they may be better able to enforce them.
