Blackburn residents to meet police over spate of jewellery thefts

Worries grow within Asian community after new spate of gold and gem thefts

Worries grow within Asian community after new spate of gold and gem thefts

First published in News

A PUBLIC meeting has been called after a spate of thefts of Asian heritage jewellery.

Victims have lost thousands of pounds worth of gold from their homes in Blackburn. It comes on the back of five incidents over the weekend which saw homes in Audley Range raided with jewellery worth thousands of pounds stolen.

Now worried residents in the Asian community have teamed up with Blackburn with Darwen Council to set up a meeting to discuss concerns with police.

Yusuf Patel, of Windsor Close, said he lost about £8,000 worth of gold and jewellery in a theft at his home last month.

Mr Patel, who owns a web design firm, said: “Last month I was burgled and they stole £7,000 to £8,000 worth of gold. Along with other people in the community we raised concerns with local councillor Salim Sidat and he decided to liaise with me and organise a meeting.

“The thefts are a big problem and this is a call for action.

“There is a lot of negativity about the police and the council and people say they are not doing enough. This is a chance for them to tell us what they are doing and we want plenty of local people to come and voice concerns.”

Coun Sidat said the meeting was a chance for the police to reassure concerned residents.

He said: “We have a lot of residents who are worried. We have got two of the local police inspectors coming and I am hoping council leader Kate Hollern and the deputy police and crime commissioner Ibby Master will be there, too. We want to reassure people that everything that can be done is being done. The police are trying to get to the bottom of it.

“What I would say is that people should not have that amount of gold and jewellery in their homes. People have had £10,000 worth of stuff in their house and they should really put it in the bank.”

The meeting is next Tuesday at 6pm and all residents have been invited.

Why is it all the fault of the Police or the Council?

Yes, I'm sure they have a part it play but if you are going to keep high value items in your own home common sense would suggest you spend a few quid on a safe. It's not difficult is it?

Apart from which I tried reporting an issue to the police a couple of months ago and I gave up after 8 minutes when no one answered the phone. I certainly didn't get TWO Inspectors a Council leader and the Dept Police Crime Commissioner coming to visit me.

Burglars are stealing anything of value. Lead off roofs, copper from sub stations, flagstones from schoolyards, organ pipes from churches, sheep from farmers, etc. They know that a lot of Asians have gold in their homes. An easy target for them.
It's no use blaming the police. They can't be watching every home. If you can afford six thousand pounds worth of gold you should be able to afford a good wall safe.
As for insurance, are these items documented and photographed before they apply for insurance ? If not, they should be, and they should be insured separately. This, essentially Asian problem, should not affect the insurance rates of others who do not have large amounts of gold and jewelry in their homes.

Wish people would stop blaming the police who are under staffed. Yes you get burgled the police will come and investigate and try to catch the bad guys. To prevent it from happening is down to the homeowners. If these people are losing £7000 cash and £8000 worth of jewellery spend £1-£2k on an alarm connected to the police, a decent CCTV system and a safe that you can bolt to ground or floor. These crimes are not going to stop as there is lots of different groups who do it coming from other towns and locally as they know they can get a good pay day for one easy burglary of smashing a window and helping themselves. Don't be a victim by getting decent security or alternatively splash your money on fancy cars and jewellery and live it in the house with a was of notes and risk being next weeks story!

I agree...poetic justice.
The fact that its highly likely these crimes are being committed to fund drug addictions to class A drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine...drugs largely sold in the town of Blackburn by Asian gangs.
If they want to stop the burglaries, then put a stop to the Asians who encourage it by offering/selling drugs
I dont see any meetings to discuss why 95% of class A drugs in this town are sold by Asians in their own communities.
The drug problem is causing these burglaries....the solution to stopping them is pretty obvious...poetic justice.
Take a look at the names of all people convicted in the Blackburn & Preston courts should you need any proof of this.

First of all I am absolutely disgusted by the comments I read on this website.

Some of you people are so narrow minded you just need to get out more, educate yourselves more and you need to get rid of that hatred inside your system... It's very unhealthy!

My house got burgled last Friday in the couple of hours that we were out, I work all week and so does my husband. We never leave the house without putting our alarm on. The burglars used a crowbar to pull open the window ledge from the back of my house, they then disconnected the alarm by cutting wires open, they went straight upstairs and found my gold which was given to me from my mother in law and mother on my wedding. I can't put this in the bank because the banks don't have safety deposit boxes anymore! They then ransacked my whole upstairs looking for cash luckily I don't keep a penny in the house never would! They ransacked it so bad I couldn't see the floor in my house. I feel sick that somebody did this, i still haven't managed to get my house sorted. Asian people keep gold because it goes up in value and it's passed on in the family. We didn't have insurance so I have lost the gold that has the obvious financial value and sentimental value and more than that I have lost the security which I felt in my beautiful home which is supposed to be a safe place.

So before you come out with your racist insensitive comments just think because people are really suffering! Me and my husband work therefore we can make up for what we lost but what about the people who are older and their life savings which have been stolen!

The reason why people aren't satisfied with the police is because there were 5 burglaries that same night then another 4 the day after and then more the days after that along with the many burglaries already taken place in revidge rd, pleckgate Preston new rd areas! The whole situation is Out Of Control !!!!

Perhaps if police time was not being used up attending cash for crash scams then the police would be in a position to target their policing elsewhere; don't forget that even the police are subject to cost cutting austerity measures and so cannot be in two places at any one time. With regard your burglary, I do feel for you and I know how horrible the experience is. However, you do state that you do not have nor had insurance. Surely that is a hard lesson learned. I personally have household insurance and do not possess any individual items of major value, but by having it I do have peace of mind. Finally you state that "Asian people keep gold because it goes up in value and it's passed on in the family". So are you saying that it is a way storing a a financial asset without the need for declaring the value of the items to others or also without having to declare any profits, (if sold) and thus some people may be failing to fulfill their tax obligations when resold at a profit?

People should invest in burglar alarms and cctv in today's technology if there is a burglar in your home you get an instant message in your iphones plus the cctv will store the images of the burglar.
You can put iron railings on your doors and windows if you want a extra security .

Once again complete narrow mindedness - I am Asian I have a professional job so do my sisters, cousins and many of my asian friends! Yes there are the women from the older generation that may not work but believe me some of them will have a better social life than a lot of other people!!!! By no means are they just staying at home you're deluded if that's what you perceive to be the case!

The police have said its a gang from Manchester a mixture of white and Asian males committing these burglaries.. they just need enough evidence to charge them they are saying, but I would never judge the whole white community on the few white males committing burglaries... That would be ridiculous if one did that so why don't some of you stop constantly addressing the whole Asian community based on the wrongdoings of a few Asian people! Why are some folk so naive and don't understand we are all different individuals!!

Completely agree with your statements, people on here have no idea and use any any excuse to have a dig. If this was the white community being robbed in this way then you wouldn't see most of the vile comments on here. Gangs are a mixture of white and Asian and they target homes regardless of CCTV. They use metal detectors and target homes using surveillance over weeks. I've got CCTV and they attempted to rob my car in full view of CCTV. These robberies are being committed regularly and they seem to be getting away with it. Its only right to have a discussion with the police on how to tackle It going forward and qualm any frustrations from residents.

There is nothing narrow minded about facts. Some of your quotes of 'metal detectors' and 'surveillance over weeks' are ridiculous. It is highly likely to be mixed ethnic gangs committing the crimes, I agree, but its also more likely that these crimes are originating based on tip offs from the Asian community. This is the reason why they are getting away with it.
Criminals commit crimes in the communities/areas in which they feel most comfortable being in and will target members of their own ethnic background due to this. They will have knowledge of the area and the people in it and when they are likely to be out of the home, ie. inside knowledge...
These burglaries/houses will be targeted based upon local knowledge of that household and its content and the only people who have that are locals/friends/famil
y etc. Its not nice to think that people you know would steal from you but this is more than likely the truth...its not narrow minded or racist...its a fact.
As for people on here having no idea, I have over 30 yrs experience in the field of crime as a I work in the justice system.

First of all I am sorry what has happened to your son!! That is just nasty and whoever did that wherever they were from that's scum!

But your comments... This is exactly what I mean... Complete racism!!!!

You think all Asians are criminals..... Hahahahaha you make me laugh!!

Do you walk around with your eyes closed, do you not see the many Asians working as doctors, pharmacists, dentists, lawyers, council workers, surgeons, police officers, teachers, architects and the hardworking individuals that run businesses in these tough times! You keep mentioning fancy cars has it not occurred to you that many Asians live with their parents for quite a long time without paying the parents any kind of board that my white friends have had to pay and they manage to save a lot due to this also they don't have to spend on drinking every weekend! So they can afford a fancy car quite easily and they move out when they have the means to and some don't even move out of their parents houses so they will obviously save a lot!

When you go to countries like Dubai, Egypt, turkey, morocco etc you see many white ex pats that have settled there, you will be shocked how nicely they are treated and welcomed to them countries even though they are from a complete different county - I am British and still I have to see and hear racism constantly! I was born here where am I meant to go???! I would love to move to Dubai so hopefully one day - I'm sure that will make you very happy!

The thing is you are just too ill educated about the Asian community and I don't think you'll ever understand Asian people, this is why I'm not going to waste my time here much because the racism is rooted so deep within I don't think it'll ever go... Very very sad! :-(

Oh and one more thing I am not deluded I know there are those that deal drugs its sickening but they exist in every community! If you research the crime on this very area of blackburn you will SEE exactly where police time is being spent and exactly what crimes they are dealing with... In fact here is the link have a very good look! Anti social behaviour 6681 cases whereas drugs 232 cases obviously drugs is a disgusting problem that ruins lives but your deluded when you think police are only involved in that.. Anti social behaviour 6681 cases police have to deal with now when do you think the majority of that takes place..... Friday night? Saturday night? When people are INTOXICATED???

Well let me tell you the whole metal detector issue was in the telegraph and has been confirmed by police. in addition I have seen CCTV where the burglars drive past my friends house see that she is leaving her house, and then ring the doorbell to ensure no one else is in. so its not ridiculous. I agree there maybe someone giving info in addition to this.

Yet all these empty homes are being robbed. Which can only mean that someone very close in your own community is doing this that knows the victims well enough to know there daily routines. It cannot be a stranger because Asian woman spend to much time at home.[/p]
Why are some folk so naive and don't understand we are all different individuals!![/p]
Its only right to have a discussion with the police on how to tackle It going forward and qualm any frustrations from residents.[/p]
These burglaries/houses will be targeted based upon local knowledge of that household and its content and the only people who have that are locals/friends/famil y etc. Its not nice to think that people you know would steal from you but this is more than likely the truth...its not narrow minded or racist...its a fact. As for people on here having no idea, I have over 30 yrs experience in the field of crime as a I work in the justice system.[/p]
Well let me tell you the whole metal detector issue was in the telegraph and has been confirmed by police. in addition I have seen CCTV where the burglars drive past my friends house see that she is leaving her house, and then ring the doorbell to ensure no one else is in. so its not ridiculous. We are not all racist regarding these burglaries keeps happening in Blackburn and other parts of UK.There are something 95% of UK population that a very much law abiding and 5% of people resort to crimes ie burglaries robberies drug dealing, murder ,rapes and gang violence .
There are currently 100,000 people in prison in UK for various offences and out of that 62.000 are whites ,6,000 are Asians,12,000 Blacks and rest 22,000 are other ethnic groups.
Crime is still low in this country compared to many countries in Europe and North America.
We are all British Subjects regardless of race and gender have been victims of crimes in this country. So keep racism out of this spate of burglaries been happening in Blackburn. We should all tackle crimes and help our communities and our Police force to keep crime levels down in our town.
To all the residents is to ensure their homes are secure and form a neighbourhood watch group and help the Police so they can keep offenders out of your neighbourhood.

If people have £1000s worth of jewelry kept in their homes... then surely they can afford sophisticated security such as an alarm system.

Or even a sold steel safe... the top notch ones go for around £500.... they are bolted on to the floor.. and even without the bolt, are impossible to lift unless you have a fork lift truck of around a doze strong men. They are even fire proof.. so all your important documents can go in there.

What about CCTV ? Around £250..... excellent security to deter any would be intruder.

I know a security consultant... and he says the vast majority of burglaries take place where there is little or no preventative security (ie alarm). And the same people that have had their valuables stolen, will then go and install an alarm..... which is taking action after the event.... it should have been installed before they had their stuff stolen.

Police can do so much..... one has to take preventative action oneself..... alarms have a use... it's a massive deterrent..... and if the the intruder has the nerve to break in regardless of the alarm going off...he will rush and panick.....and if you have a good sage it would be impossible for him to break it to get to your valuables.. and he will leave empty handed.

Surely spending a few £100 to protect £1000s just simple sense.

Alarms have a use???? They deter...

That's exactly what I thought, but they have been disconnecting the alarms.. Cutting the wires off as soon as they get in! And you think CCTV deters them... They just cover themselves! They are not bothered!! They also at one persons burglary managed to decode the safe and stole everything that was inside! The police said its likely they have been to prison before and learned all this... These burglars are sick individuals!

Only thing I will say is even though I have been burgled and lost everything I have worked so hard for all my life with not a chance at even starting to begin to replace anything, things could be much worse... I could be one of you!

Because they have information on which houses are owned by Asian, this is what the police are saying! Obviously we don't know what kind of information they have... blackburn lass.... Get a solid 1m high safe. They weigh nearly nearly half a tonne. Bolt it to the ground. Put all your valuables in there. Problem solved. The safe will set you back £500 max. No matter how many thieves try to get at it... they wont -its impossible.

Also, the way you describe how the thieves broke into your property.. it seems your windows most likely had external beading which means the crooks were able to ply the beads from the outside and so remove the window pretty easily. Modern windows have internal beading which means windows can only be removed from the inside.

If you have so much valuables in the house.. it pays to get a security consultant to advise you on safety and security.

CyberWala

These burglars are sick individuals!
get key ones.... and not safes worth a few pounds.. i'm talking about safes by such companies as Dudley (search Dudley Safes on the net)... industrial type ones. Not poxy metal ones.

As for decoding someone's safe. I highly doubt thieves were able to decode it.. it would take a decoding genius of decades of experience to even find the first two digits never mind the whole set....unless of course they already knew the password....... more like they broke their way into it.... cheap ones are pretty easy to smash.
