A FORMER East Lancashire student is enjoying sparkling success — while running a jewellery business from his university bedroom.

Tyler Kearney left St Mary’s College, in Blackburn, last summer and has just completed the first year of a degree in graphic design at Northumbria University.

The 18-year-old, from Burnley, launched his own jewellery design business SCOGS while at college, which he is continuing to run from his bedroom at his halls of residence.

As well as his studies, Tyler has also been expanding his jewellery business and has now launched his own website and online shop.

The teen also got the opportunity to showcase some of his pieces, which are made from clock mechanisms, at one of the world’s biggest clothes shows, London Fashion Week, after Burnley fashion designer Carrie-Ann Kay spotted his work.

Tyler, of Westwood Road, said: “It has been a really busy year and I have been having to employ my course friends recently to help keep up with the demand.

“It has been really difficult balancing my degree and business, but I have had design students help me.”

The youngster insisted he would continue to make all of the products himself to ensure they were of top quality.

And the pieces have been so popular that Tyler decided to launch his website, allowing customers to place orders directly, rather than going through Facebook.

Tyler, who was awarded the academic scholarship at his university and is planning on spending August travelling around Europe, said: “I am really excited for it and it is good to be doing something I am enjoying. I am not sure I want to do this as a career as I want to go into graphic design as well, but I definitely want to keep the business going.”
