COUNCIL bosses have confirmed that a former school, and two 19th-century villas next door, could make way for a regeneration scheme.

The former Woodtop School, in Burnley, could be wholly, or partly, demolished as part of the redevelopment of the Accrington Road corridor.

Plans have already been endorsed to demolish 185 and 187 Accrington Road, known as Claremont Villas, which date back to 1871.

Meanwhile, fresh plans have also been lodged with the borough council to redevelop the former Woodtop Mill.

In 2010, planning permission was granted for a housing and employment development on the site, but developers claim there has been no interest in such a scheme. Plans have now been unveiled for 25 properties at the old mill, bounded by Villiers Street, Brush Street, and vacant land. The two, three and four-bedroom homes would be constructed once the final mill buildings are cleared.
