A FOOD poverty conference is set to be held in the Ribble Valley for the first time.

The conference has been organised by the ecumenical group of Christians in Clitheroe, Clitheroe Christians in Partnership (CCP) and the Christian Aid and CAFOD activists in the Ribble Valley.

The groups have called the conference, entitled ‘Free a Friend’, to discuss the issue of food poverty in the Ribble Valley and beyond.

Among the speakers at the public event will be Ruth Haldane, the Ribble Valley Foodbank manager, Jim Cook from Clitheroe-based charity The Solomon Project and Rev Andrew Whitehead from St Mary Magdalene’s Church, Clitheroe.

Dave Hardman from Christian Aid and Fred Uttley, a CAFOD volunteer, will also speak at the event at the St Mary’s Centre in Church Street, Clitheroe, on Saturday, May 10, from 9.30am.

The conference comes as the Ribble Valley Food Bank announced that it had fed 1,000 people since opening it’s two sites in Clitheroe and Longridge.

A spokesman from the ‘Feed a Friend’ conference said: “Food poverty is an issue which affects all communities.

“With the rise in the use of food banks in the UK, it has become clear that this is a problem which cannot be ignored.

“Recently published research from DEFRA adds weight to claims of bodies like the Trussell Trust; that food poverty is a real issue in the UK.

“These speakers will remind us about the issue of global food poverty, and try to make links between the UK picture and the global problem.

“As we start Christian Aid week, what is the relationship between the people who are hungry in Lancashire and the people who are hungry in the developing world?”

Rev Whitehead will chair the conference.

The result of 4yrs of conservative led government that gives away billions of pounds to foreign dictators to pay for space programes and nuclear weapons.
Of course there are plantation owners, champagne swilling hooray Henry tories who will call those who are forced to use food banks scroungers that drink, smoke and sit at home watching satellite telly. A thousand of them in the Ribble valley apparently. No excuse? Well i don't see 1000 jobs advertised do you? No it's far better to employ eastern europeans on zero hours contracts for poverty wages.
Just think about voting UKIP at the euro elections and general election because the corrupt clowns we have in power at present don't deserve to be.

It's UKIP all the way for me also for more than two reasons. Most importantly though is the fact that the leaders of the lib/con junta have both lied in their last election campaigns. Tuition fees and cutting immigration to tens of thousands come to mind.
What is the point in giving billions away in foreign aid to other countries when our own people are going hungry?
Some might argue that 7% of our GDP given away in foreign aid isn't a lot. Err it's billiions that could otherwise be used to help pensioners in this country heat their homes. It could also do away with the need for food banks. Not only that but the clowns are borrowing money to give away in foreign aid when we are told there have to be austerity measures. No austerity for MP's or bankers though, even the criminal ones. They get 11% pay rises, bankers and ceo's get huge obscene bonuses. What do you get? A pay cut or if you are on benefits every possible excuse for having your benefits sanctioned and then forced to use a food bank just so the government can show a reduction in the unemployment figures.
Unemployment figures that would be a hell of a lot lower if we were out of Europe and companies had to take on British workers instead of foreign agency workers for poverty wages.
I have nothing against muslims. I just don't want my country turned into a third world islamic state, with my kids forced to attend an islamic school, and have to live under sharia law, and eat halal meat. Rightly or wrongly i feel i am having a third world country and religion imposed on me and i do not want to wait until i have to take to the streets to defend my culture and religion. It is not a racist argument. I am not forcing my culture on muslim immigrants It is their choice to come to live in the UK, and they should accept that when in Britain then they should not expect me to live like they. Sadly our government can not understand this as they do not live where it affects them.
Well that's me having vented my spleen and given a few reasons to vote for a party that does actually care and understand. what me and so many other people are feeling.

Just a simple ditto here, we'll said, my thoughts exactly on everything you say, UKIP must succeed to send the protest out to the other three party's who just keep taking us the British people for granted.

Vote UKIP, stand up for GReat Britain.
