LANDSCAPING work around the outside of the new Colne Health Centre will be completed in time for the facility opening later this month.

Local councillor Tony Greaves had called for improvements to be made around the building, after residents complained about the poor state of walls, fencing and the banking at the back of the site.

Now NHS building chiefs have said the problems will be fixed by the time centre officially opens, on May 19.

Coun Greaves wrote to Andrea Whittingham, the operational property manager at the NHS Property Services office in Accrington to ask them to sort out the problems.

He said: “The new Health Centre is a splendid modern building. We are all proud to have got it in Colne and it would be a shame to spoil it due to poor housekeeping round the edges.”

Among the problems identified by Coun Greaves were steep banking at the back of the site, rubble and building materials on the banking at the Newtown end, concerns about the planting on the edge of the site, a broken fence on the Craddock Road border and some coping stones missing on parts of the boundary wall in St John Street and West Street.

Andy Pratt, project director for NHS Property Services, said: “Unfortunately the grounds outside the health centre have been waterlogged which has prevented some of the work being undertaken.

“However, the contractors are aware of the issues and have assured us that the landscaping work will be completed by the May 19 when the health centre officially opens.”
